Roost Records is an American jazz record label.

History of the record label

The record label Roost Records (also known under the name of Royal Roost Records) was founded in 1949 primarily as a jazz label. The name refers to the New York club, the Royal Roost, where many well-known jazz musicians this time, as Charlie Parker had occurred. The most famous musicians on the Roost label was the saxophonist Stan Getz, who recorded the legendary Roost Recordings at the beginning of his career in the early 1950s, some with guitarist Johnny Smith. On the label of Charlie Parker's live recordings were released in 1953 from the Boston club Storyville and recordings of Dizzy Gillespie. Other musicians who started on Roost Records records, were Johnny Hartman, Gene Quill, Sonny Stitt, Eddie Bonnemere, Seldon Powell, Johnny Smith, Tony Aless, Art Tatum, Ruth Price, Billy Taylor, Bud Powell, Shirley Scott, Terry Gibbs, Buddy Rich / Louie Bellson.

In 1968 the label was acquired by Morris Levy and incorporated into Roulette Records.
