Fundamental bass is the German translation of the coined by Jean -Philippe Rameau concept of basse fondamentale. It is a term used in music theory, specifically from their sub-regions harmony, and counterpoint. Under fundamental bass is there a partly virtual bass line understood that consists of the basic notes of a chord progression. Virtual is the fundamental bass at the moment, where the chord root is not in the bass but in a higher voice.
