Ropczyce

Ropczyce ( German Ropschitze ) is a small town in Subcarpathian Voivodeship in Poland. The city is the seat of the homonymous urban and rural commune ( gmina miejsko - wiejska ) and the powiat Ropczycko - Sędziszowski.

Geography

The city is located 120 kilometers east of Krakow and 28 km west Rzeszów, on the river Wielopolka.

History

To 1772

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1254. 1266 the village was destroyed by Lithuanian and Russian troops. Ropczyce was awarded on March 3, 1362 the city right after the Magdeburg law by King Casimir the Great. 1439, the school of the parish was established. In 1504 the city was destroyed by the Tatars. In 1655 the city was occupied by the Swedes.

1772-1939

Due to the partition of Poland in 1772 Ropczyce fell to the Habsburg- Lorraine. 1855 powiat Ropczycko was formed. 1856 -1858, the city was at the railway line Vienna - connected Lviv. Ropczyce remained part of Galicia until the end of World War I in 1918.

1937 Ropczyce lost the seat of Powiats to Dębica.

1939 to today

On 7 September 1939, the Wehrmacht occupied the city. The Jewish population was imprisoned in a labor camp. In 1942, she was shot in part. The rest were taken to the camp Pustków and the Belzec extermination camp. The Polish population was recruited for forced labor. 1944, the city was liberated by the Soviet army. In the following months there was fighting between the Communists and the Polish Home Army.

1956 Ropczyce was again county seat and remained there until 1975. From 1975 to 1998 belonged to the province of Rzeszów. Over the years, several farms were settled in the city, including a magnesite and a sugar factory.

1999 Ropczyce was again county seat. In 2000, a School of Agricultural Engineering was established in the city.

Education

The municipality has four kindergartens ( Przedszkole ), a primary school ( SzkoĹ Podstawowa ) and twelve school centers with elementary and middle school. Furthermore, there is a library and a cultural center.

The municipality has an areal extent of 138.99 km ², of which 73 % are used for agriculture and 16 % is covered by forest.

By Ropczyce the Droga Krajowa runs 4 and is here from the Province Road 986 ( Droga wojewódzka 986 ) crossed. Ropczyce is on the railway line Vienna - Lviv.
