The Roper River is a river in the north of the Australian Territory Northern Territory. Ludwig Leichhardt called it in October 1845 John Roper, a member of his first Australia Expedition 1844-1845.

River

The Roper River arises in Elsey National Park near the town of Mataranka from the confluence of the Waterhouse River and Roper Creek and ends after 400 km in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The river is navigable for a distance of about 145 km from the tidal limit at the ford in Roper Bar
