Rosary Basilica
The Rosary Basilica is a church and minor basilica in south-west France Marian shrine of Lourdes. In it, especially the praying of the Rosary is celebrated. The sacred building situated a little east of St. Mary's Basilica ( " Upper Basilica " ) and is part of the church complex. The church building, built in the Neo-Byzantine style, holds up to 1,500 people and is the third oldest religious building in the pilgrimage complex.
History
The Basilica is the third sacred building by the crypt and the " Upper Basilica ", which was built on the site near the Marian apparition. The church building was designed by architect Leopold Hardy. Its foundation stone was laid in 1883, with completion 1889. The consecration of the church took place in 1901. Pope Leo XIII. praised in the Apostolic Letter entitled Parta humano generi from September 8, 1901 particularly the inauguration of the Rosary Basilica.
Architecture
The nave is round, open and crowned by a dome, which has a total of 16 stained glass windows. The gold-plated crown with cross is a gift of the newly independent Ireland from the year 1924. 's 15 sections between the round windows are available for the 15 groups of ten a traditional rosary. The nave is surrounded by 15 smaller chapels, and each chapel each symbolized a mystery of the Rosary: Left of the main axis are the Joyful Mysteries, right glorious mysteries and centrally the Sorrowful mysteries.
Each chapel is a large mosaic with the content or topic of the mystery and a Latin inscription. Most mosaics built around 1900. Each side chapel contains an altar with six candles. A central mosaic shows the representation of the Virgin Mary with outstretched arms, heads of angels and the heading "Par Marie à Jésus " (Eng. " to Jesus through Mary "). The semi-circular entrance area of the Rosary Basilica dominates a representation of the Virgin Mary, which issues the St. Dominic a rosary. The exterior facade of the sacred building was altered in 2007 by the mosaic " Luminous Mysteries" was added to the 15 mosaics from 2002.
Equipment
The organ was built in 1897 by organ builder Aristide Cavaillé -Coll. The instrument has 42 registers on three manuals and pedal. The play and Registertrakturen are electric.
