Rosedale Abbey

Only in the middle of the 19th century was a village when the Rosedale in a few years became an important conveying and processing site of iron ore. The boom began in 1861, when the North Eastern Railway, a branch line to Rosedale laid so that the iron ore could be brought in large quantities for smelting continue to Teesside. In a few years the population rose from 548 in 1851 to 2,839 in 1871. Calcination took place on site in large kilns.

The boom lasted until stocks run 1920. Remains of Rosedale Railway are as yet available as the remains of large kilns from this time.
