Rosemary Byrne

Rosemary Byrne ( born 1948 in Irvine ) is a Scottish politician, member of the Solidarity Party and former member of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP).

Life

Byrne attended the Irvine Royal Academy and the Craigie College in Ayr. She graduated with a teaching degree and then worked as a teacher in North Ayrshire. Byrne is married and a member of the Educational Institute for Scotland.

Political career

In the first Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 Byrne stepped up to the Scottish Socialist Party. They do not applied for a direct mandate of a constituency, but was set to the first rank of the Regional Evaluation of the SSP for the election Region South of Scotland. Since the SSP only about 1 % of the votes received in these elections in the constituency, they could not send candidates in the newly created Scottish Parliament. On the UK level she applied to the general election of 2001 by the direct mandate of the constituency of Cunninghame South, missed with a vote share of 4.3 % of the catchment in the British House of Commons clearly. In the parliamentary elections in 2003 Byrne won with 11.8% the third largest share of the vote in their constituency Cunninghame South. She was, however, also listed on the first rank of the Regional Evaluation of the SSP South of Scotland, she received as a result of the election results a list of reference and drew for the first time in the Scottish Parliament. Together with other members of the SSP Byrne left in 2006, the party and became a founding member of the new party Solidarity. Along with Tommy Sheridan, she was elected party leader. In the following 2007 parliamentary elections Byrne led the electoral list of Solidarity in the constituency. However, the party won none of the mandates and Byrne retired from the Parliament from.
