Rosendo Balinas Jr.

Rosendo Carreon Balinas ( born September 10, 1941 in Manila, † 24 September 1998 Antipolo City ) was a Filipino chess master.

Rosendo Balinas, a lawyer by profession, was in the 1960s and 1970s, before the success of Eugenio Torres, as the strongest chess player in Asia. In 1975, his FIDE awarded the title of International Master, 1976, the Grand Master title.

Balinas won the championship seven times in the Philippines. From 1964 to 1976 he played for the Philippines in chess Olympiads, but he won in 1966 in Havana, an individual silver medal for his score of 15 ½ points from 20 games. His success in the chess tournament of Odessa in 1976 was the first tournament victory of a foreign chess player in the Soviet Union since the tournament in Moscow in 1936 ( Capablanca ) and Leningrad in 1937 (Fine ).
