Rossosh, Rossoshansky District, Voronezh Oblast

Rossosh (Russian Россошь ) is a Russian city with 62,865 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Voronezh Oblast. It is located near the Ukrainian border, some 210 km south of the regional capital Voronezh, on the left bank of the Chernaya Kalitwa ( river system of the Don ). The nearest town is Pavlovsk, which is also included in the Voronezh oblast 46 km northeast of Rossosh.

History

End of the 16th century, the South Russian steppe of Tsar Peter the Great was conquered, to hedge against attacks villages were founded, including Rossosh, which is 1721 for the first time mentioned. Until the 19th century Rossosh was a village that in the 1850s had about 5500 inhabitants.

In the late 19th century developed the place, especially after the completion of the railroad from Voronezh to Rostov-on- Don in 1871, at a local center for trade in agricultural products. A little later began here with the construction of a sugar factory industrialization.

During the Second World War, a successful offensive of the Red Army against the German Wehrmacht took place in January 1943 in the area Ostrogozhsk / Rossosh instead.
