Rostock Art Gallery

The Art Gallery was opened as a museum of contemporary art in Rostock on 15 May 1969. It is located right in the parking area of the swan pond in Reutershagen district.

The Kunsthalle Rostock is both an art museum and an exhibition center for temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. Periodically works by major artists from home and abroad are introduced. Also artists in the region have at Kunsthalle Rostock forum.

History

The building was the first and only new building of an art museum in the GDR and is the largest exhibition venues for contemporary art in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern.

The museum is now an art collection of about 520 paintings, 200 sculptures and graphic works 6000 most East German art. The collection should also be understood as part of an artistic tradition which goes back to the 20s of the 20th century. So there are among them some valuable drawings of the Dresden late Expressionism and New Objectivity. Another focus of the collection is beyond the art from the regions of Mecklenburg and Vorpommern dar.

Since 1 March 2009, the Kunsthalle is operated privately. The Chairman of the operators association per Kunsthalle, the dentist Jörg -Uwe Neumann, took over the hall. A red cube with illuminated signature of the architect Maik Buttler was inaugurated in front of the Kunsthalle.
