History

On the route between Rostock Central Station and the seaside resort of Warnemünde existed long a dense suburban traffic. Collectively, he has been favored since 1923 by cheap day return.

The temporary suspension of these deals led in 1953 to protests by the workers of the Warnow Werft, so a few weeks later came the old tariffs in force. With begun in the 1960s construction of new settlements along this stretch the importance of this relationship grew.

The existing route via Schmarl was partly for the oldest and largest of these development areas, Luetten small, too far away, on the other hand, more new housing estates were planned on the route. In the 1960s, a first routing was considered west of the city highway to Warnemünde, because of the high construction costs, these plans were not pursued. Instead, began in 1968 the construction of a road next to the city motorway on the east side. First, a branch line of Bramow was opened after Luetten small, to connect the residential area with the city center and the port area on 12 July 1970. From Bramow to Evershagen the track was located next to the main track to Warnemünde in the position of the former second track. On this day also went, leaning on the tariffs of other urban railways, tariff simplification into force. A trip from Rostock to Warnemunde uniform cost 50 Pfennig, for shorter distances you paid the normal tariff of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

The route to Luetten Klein was extended in the following years to the north and south of the holding point Warnemünde Werft reintroduced into the old track. With the completion of this new line in 1974, the official start as S -Bahn (now S1 ) and the previously irregular traffic was harmonized with. The old route across the Schmarl station was decommissioned.

On 14 December 1985, the electrical equipment on the Rostock S -Bahn was taken. In rush hour trains ran from Turning three four-part double-deck units that were covered up to the electrification of the series with 118, followed by the Series 243 (now 143).

Then the route to the port of Rostock was not considered a train, even if all the rides were bound by there and from Warnemünde. Only in 1987 the S-Bahn tariff was introduced to the international port. The official designation "S -Bahn " for the trains to the seaport was not introduced until 1988.

From 1982 to inverted several S -Bahn trains from Warnemünde to Rostock on to the fertilizer plant in Popp village. These trains were considered pure rush hour trains and stood east of Rostock for the portion not in public timetables. 1992, these trains were stopped.

After the change in the GDR went back to the 1990s, the volume of traffic during rush hour, on the one hand, most large companies were taking down personal or fully closed and that the residential areas along the S-Bahn routes lost inhabitants. The train lengths were shortened gradually until complete sets of three double -decker cars. In 2002, the 7.5 -minute intervals were thinned during rush hour on a 10 -minute intervals.

Also since the 1990s, the local trains of Güstrow to Rostock are referred to as S -Bahn and continuously guided to Warnemünde.

Planning with the aim to link the S-Bahn system Rostock tram of the city to a light rail system were abandoned in 2007.

In 2009, the state of Mecklenburg -Western Pomerania wrote to operate on the same subnet " Warnow " from, which in addition to Rostock S -Bahn and the lines Wismar - Rostock - Ticino, ( Bad Doberan ) - Rostock - Graal- Müritz and Wismar - Ludwig Lust. include DB Regio West won the bid and will remain operator of Rostock S -Bahn and is also the Rostock - Laage - Güstrow take over. From the timetable change in 2012 this line was added to the S - Bahn network and managed as S3. Between Rostock and Warnemünde the trains in the rush hour every 7.5 minutes and during low traffic time every 15 minutes, on the other sections from Monday to Friday every 60 minutes, weekends still only every 2 hours.

Mid- May 2012 according to the Ministry of Energy, Infrastructure and Regional Development Mecklenburg -Vorpommern, that the future line S4 should not be introduced at the Port of Rostock. From the Rostock city council came contradiction to this, here we called for an extension of the S -Bahn to the ferry terminal in the overseas port. The passenger seaport was still completely canceled on 9 December 2012. Is also no longer uses the stop in Mierdorf ( at Güstrow ).

As of December 2012, all lines should be driven with brand-new, five-part electric railcar Bombardier Talent 2, which should replace the old double-deck push-pull trains (S1 and S2) and diesel railcars ( S3). The timetable change in 2012 these trains were not yet available. On the lines S1 and S2 further perverted the old sets, the S3 line was divided into two parts in Rostock (Warnemünde - Rostock Hbf and Rostock Hbf - Laage - Güstrow ) between Rostock and Güstrow wrong locomotive-hauled trains with newer bi-level cars.

Vehicle use

For a long time traveling between Rostock and Warnemünde double-deck push-pull trains. For a long time came trains of two four-part double-deck road trains used in commuter traffic since the mid- 1970s, even partially composed of three parts with a total of twelve cars. In the 1980s, the road trains were replaced by double-decker single-car, the 2013 were for a modernization in the 1990s and still in use.

Except for the new building Bombardier bi-level cars on the S3, the cars were marked with the letters " S -Bahn Rostock DB".
