Rothaarsteig
The Rothaarsteig ( Wegzeichen R) is a 154.0 km long and 2001 eröffneter distance trail runs in particular on the main ridge of the Rothaargebirge, a low mountain range in North Rhine -Westphalia (NW) and Hessen (HE ), and in the Westerwald variant a detour in Westerwald, a low mountain range in North Rhine -Westphalia, Hesse and Rhineland- Palatinate.
The German Hiking Institute in Marburg has the Rothaarsteig awarded the German Wandersiegel Premiumweg.
Overview
The Rothaarsteig was opened on 6 May 2001 at the Ginsburg. His main path leads from Brilon ( NW) through the Rothaar predominantly südsüdwestwärts among other things, the Langeberg (highest mountain in North Rhine -Westphalia ) to Dillenburg (HE).
The largest part of the Rothaarsteig is Rothaargebirge Nature Park. It runs mostly along the Rhine -Weser watershed over most forested mountains, through valleys bordered by forest, past flowing water sources, natural and cultural monuments happened and leads inter alia through nature reserves. The trail uses the existing network of paved and unpaved forest roads and connects in sparsely populated areas mountains and attractions such as the Bruchhauser stones, the Langeberg, the Kahler Asten, the Rhein- Weser -Turm, the Ginsburg and the Ruhr, Eder, victory - and Lahn source. Main path

After the riser on the crossroads Upper Burbecker space (approx. 795 m) extends southwards for Rothaarsteig hut ( about 800 m). He bends to the east and leads directly south of the nature reserve Neuer Hagen and north of Diabasbruchs, in the west shoulder of the Clemens Berg ( 839.2 m; Clemens Cross) is, to the eastern edge of the protected area on the border of North Rhine -Westphalia and Hesse located Hoppecke source (just 780 m; 29.3 km.
Along this boundary the trail leads south then. The 13.7 km long valley trail, also called Sauerland variant is the most important byway of the Rothaarsteig. The 52.5 km long Westerwald variant is a branch off from the main trail Rothaarsteig Wegvariante that runs through parts of the Westerwald and there by Rhineland- Palatinate. It branches in the field of Kalteiche off to south-southwest, leads over to the High Westerwald and thence north-eastwards to Dillenburg. Befahrung by bicycle
The use of the Rothaarsteig by bicycle is difficult, but possible. The slopes can reach 15%, added in parts damaged and silted by forestry vehicles trail sections in places. Rothaarsteig Marathon
