Rothamsted Research (formerly Rothamsted Experimental Station ) is the largest agricultural research institute in the United Kingdom and at the same time the oldest world. It is located in Harpenden ( Hertfordshire) and has over 420 employees. Director of the Institute is Professor Maurice Moloney since April 2010.

History

John Bennet Lawes, the then owner of the lands of Rothamsted started together with the chemist Joseph Henry Gilbert in 1843 a series of experiments to investigate the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on yields. Lawes had in 1842 opened the first fertilizer factory. Cooperation between Lawes and Gilbert was 57 years. Until about 1900, significant amounts of data from the experiments had accumulated, which required an in-depth statistical analysis. Therefore, the statistics at Rothamsted was driven, among others, Ronald Fisher had worked since 1919 at Rothamsted.

Rothamsted provided many agricultural scientific contributions, including to pyrethroids (Michael Elliott ), virology (isolation of tobacco mosaic virus by Frederick Bawden and Norman Pirie and others), Nematology, soil science and resistance to pesticides.
