Rotselaar is a Belgian municipality located in the province of Flemish Brabant. It consists of the villages Rotselaar Werchter and Wezemaal.

History

The places Rotselaar Wezemaal and were first documented in 1044. Between 1138 and 1152 was the first mention Werchters.

In World War I it was in Rotselaar to an artillery battle in which 360 Belgian and German soldiers died. As a result of hostilities 67 houses were destroyed and killed 38 civilians.

Coat of arms

Description: Silver three (2.1 ) Asked oberhalbe red lilies. On the upper plate edge rests a Spangenhelm with red and silver helmet covers. The crest is placed a silver open air in red and silver bead.

Note: The coat of arms is identical to that of Haacht.

Attractions

  • The watermill Van Doren, whose origins go back to the 12th century, is still in operation to generate electricity.
  • The church Sint -Jan -de- Doperkerk in Werchter was built in 1439.
  • The neo-Gothic Sint- Pieterskerk in the center Rotselaars was rebuilt at a historical site in 1846.

Twinning

Since 1987, a partnership between Rotselaar and the Lower Saxony town of Bad Gandersheim.

Events

Since 1974, every year the music festival Rock Werchter with more than 100,000 visitors instead.
