Rottach (Iller)

Rottach at Rottach breakthrough

The Rottach is an approximately 14 km long, orographic right tributary of the river Iller in the Bavarian district of Upper Allgäu, Germany.

Geography

The creek became known for his role as main tributary waters of the lake increased after named him Rottach importance. The Rottach can be divided into three sections.

Upper Rottachtal

The Rottach originates northeast of Customs House in the village of Oy- Mittelberg. Until the reservoir flows through it a 4.2 km long section with a height difference of 72 meters. After the water of Rottach Customs House has passed and the sink is flowed directly under the highway bridge of the A 7, it runs through predominantly wet litter and peat meadows. A portion of the valley with an areal extent of about five hectares is designated as a nature reserve and protected accordingly (NSG Rottach moss ). Rottachsee

The outflow of Rottach from the dam lies 3.5 kilometers in a straight line measured downstream of the mouth away into the lake. Before the construction of the dam the Rottach flowed in this area spread meandering fashion by delicately structured, species-rich forest and meadow landscape.

Lower Rottachtal

After the Rottach has left the lake, the valley narrows rapidly until it goes below Riedis in a gorge-like constriction, which is called Rottach breakthrough. There was the outflowing meltwater initially denied at the end of the Ice Age, the flow, so that formed a lake. The water created the incision over time at the spill site. Today the valley in this area is predominantly forested and offers a wild and romantic sight. It is here under conservation. At Rottach mill on the border of the municipalities Sulzberg and Rettenberg the Rottach opens into the Iller. She's there, since she left the lake, overcome a distance of six kilometers and a height difference of 148 meters.
