Roundell Palmer, 1st Earl of Selborne

Roundell Palmer, 1st Earl of Selborne PC ( born November 27, 1812 in Mixbury, Oxfordshire, † May 4, 1895 ) was a British lawyer and politician.

Life

He attended Rugby School and Winchester College. He received his degree at Oxford University, he obtained in 1834 and received his master's degree in 1836., Where he met his friend Frederick William Faber know. In 1837 he was admitted to the bar.

In 1847 he became a member of the lower house and helped found the Liberal Party in 1859. Under Henry Temple, he served as Solicitor General 1861-1863, as well as Attorney General 1863-1866. Among William Ewart Gladstone, he was raised in 1872 Lord Chancellor and Baron Selborne, of Selborne in the County of Southampton. From 1880 to 1885 he was again Lord Chancellor under Gladstone and was created Viscount Wolmer, of Blackmoor raised in the County of Southampton and 1882 the Earl of Selborne.

Family

Selborne in 1848 married Lady Laura, daughter of William Waldegrave, 8th Earl Waldegrave. Their son William Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne later became a well-known politician of the Unionists.
