Roustika

Roustika (Greek Ρούστικα (n. pl. ) ) Is a village in the municipality of Nikiforos Fokas in the town of Rethymno on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete.

Location

Roustika is almost 13 kilometers southwest of Rethymno at an altitude of 290 meters.

Name Origin and History

The village name could come from the Arabic term for village Roustak, or from Latin rusticus ( = rural).

The village is said to have existed prior to the conquest of Crete by the Venetians. During the Venetian period, it was first mentioned as Rustica. The Ottoman census of 1670 recorded Christian and Muslim villagers in rustic work. In 1881, almost all of the 441 inhabitants Orthodox Christians.

Apart from some minor changes, the rural community was Roustika ( Κοινότητα Ρουστίκων Kinotita Roustikon ) 1925-1997 from the two villages Roustika with some small hamlets and Palelimnos. With the implementation of local government reform after the Kapodistrias program in 1997, the merger was followed with 13 other rural communities for community Nikiforos Fokas, this was incorporated by the administrative reform of 2010 in the Municipality of Rethymno. Since then she has the status of a village ( Τοπική Κοινότητα ).

Churches and important buildings

The monastery was founded Profitis Ιlias around the middle of the 16th century or early 17th century. From the first decades of the 17th century, the monastery was renovated several times and adds new buildings and chapels. The Katholiko the three-aisled basilica with a dome is dedicated to the Holy Trinity ( Agia Triada ), the Prophet Elias and the Agia Zoni. The present form, and the mural paintings of the dome and apse emerged after a renovation in the 19th century. The extensions of the monastery district to the east, west and south were added later.

Panagia Church ( Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary): two-aisled church dedicated to the Virgin and Christ. The interior is decorated with frescoes served to 1381.

Cultural Anestis and Manolis Anagnostakis ( private collection): Manolis Anagnostakis was a poet.

In Roustika which also has a private museum, where traditional Greek costumes can be seen.

Others

On 27 July, the village celebrates the feast day of the Prophet Elias. The public buses of KTEL network operate daily except on weekends two connections between Roustika and Rethymno.
