Canhabaque, also called Roxa, is an island in the east of Bissagos archipelago, which belongs to Guinea- Bissau. The island is almost entirely covered by mangrove forests. On the island there are 19 villages, of which Inorei is the largest. Each village is regarded as an independent social unit.

The villagers of Inorei consider not only the surroundings of the village some smaller islands as part of its territory, including the Ilheus Porcos ( Egubane, Anchurupi, Porcos ) about two kilometers north of Canhabaque.

The Bijagos on Canhabaque are traditions, such as the matriarchy, yet most arrested compared to the other islands of the archipelago.

1925 and 1936, the last rebellions against Portuguese colonial rule were put down here. The massacre of 1936 cost 35 dead and 127 wounded among the inhabitants of the island. 1500 colonial soldiers occupied the island, men were imprisoned, women and children fled to the surrounding islands.
