Roy Bhaskar

Roy Bhaskar ( born May 15, 1944 in London ) is a British philosopher and philosopher of science. He became known as the founder and representative of Critical Realism.

Academic career

From 1963 to 1966 studied Bhaskar philosophy, political science and economics at Balliol College, Oxford. Then he began a doctoral thesis on the relevance of economic theory for developing countries, but finally turned to the philosophy of science.

Bhaskar has taught at several international universities, including at universities in Edinburgh, Oxford, Sussex and at the City University London. He is currently working at the Institute of Education at the University of London.

Work

In 1975 he published his first major work A Realist Theory of Science, where he is a general philosophy of science ( " transcendental realism" ) developed. In The Possibility of Naturalism (1979), Bhaskar transferred these considerations to the social sciences. Other influential works are Scientific Realism and Human Emancipation ( 1987) and his book on dialectic Dialectic: The Pulse of Freedom (1993).

In 1998 he gave the introductory anthology Critical Realism with other representatives of Critical Realism: Essential Readings out.
