History

The Royal Bank of Canada was founded in 1864 under the name Merchants Bank in Halifax. The founders were merchants from Halifax to drive with the goal of fish and timber industries and trade in Europe. In its early years, the bank was more associated with England than with the hinterland of Canada. 1869, the name of the bank was changed to Merchants' Bank of Halifax to be the expansion to New Brunswick and Prince Edward Iceland needs. 1882 The first office outside of Canada was opened in the Bermudas.

With the first office in Montreal in 1887, finally began the period of continental expansion. In no time, branches were established in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. 1901, the name of the bank was again changed to the Royal Bank of Canada known today. 1907, the headquarters was moved to Montreal.
