Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (English about: Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh), RCSEd abbreviated, was founded in 1505 and is the oldest surgeons association in the world. It is under the patronage of the Duke of Edinburgh ( Prince Philip since 1955 ).

History and mission

The Scottish field Schern and barbers granted the Edinburgh City Council in 1505 to provide the local government with the task of " the highest possible standards in surgery ." Their conservation and development, as well as the education and training in the surgical specialties have since the central task of RCSEd. The test program for the Fellowship ( " the test" ) is sophisticated and " rigorously ": Up to 80 % of candidates from around the world fail in the elaborate testing stages.

The college comprises and represents not only all surgical disciplines, but also the dentistry, oral surgery, ophthalmology, gynecology and obstetrics and Otolaryngology.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, it publishes the journal The Surgeon. They feature is especially general surgery posts.

Importance

The RCSEd is considered the most international of the four Colleges of Surgeons in the UK (the others being the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow ). It has about 13,000 Fellows, one-third in the United Kingdom, Australia and the Commonwealth. In India and more and more in the Far East and Africa, the training programs are considered exemplary. The Membership (Part I) and Fellowship (Part II of the tests ) are the precondition of surgical careers.

Innovation and adaptability of the RCSEd are famous worldwide. The databases that access to information via the website, the Continuous Medical Education, the controls of trainers and training, the library, the archive, and not least the collection of anatomical preparations and surgical instruments are second to none.

The College of Surgeons was founded as a craft guild. From the academic physicians its members were therefore initially addressed with derogatory Mister. It later emerged the still living tradition of the salutation. Who is not a Fellow remains ( disrespect meant ) Doctor.
