Royal Danish Theatre

Det Kongelige Teater ( Royal Danish Theatre dt ) is the Danish State Theatre in Copenhagen. Since 1748 it is up to the parlor of the city, Kongens Nytorv. Det Kongelige Teater consists of four departments drama, opera, ballet and concerts.

Opera, ballet and concert form their own unit as the Royal Danish National Opera. The orchestra of this institution was in 1448 for the coronation of Christian I first mentioned, and thus is considered the oldest orchestras in Europe.

Main building

The building was carried out according to the plans of the Danish architect Vilhelm Dahlerup ( 1836-1907 ). The foundation stone was laid on Kongens Nytorv took place on October 18, 1872, the inauguration took place on 15 October 1874. Already the previous buildings had been at this place. The auditorium seats 1,600 visitors and also has a lodge for the royal family. The theater had only one stage, 1931 saw the construction of a smaller second stage.

Platforms

In order to create sufficient room for all lines and modern stage technology opportunities, 2005, a new opera house and in 2008 a new theater was built. The old theater ( Gamle scene) continues to be used mainly for the ballet and opera productions smaller.

Artistic Director

Since 2008, Erik Jacobsen leads the Royal Theatre. The four sectors of the arts guide:

  • Opera director Sven Müller ( * 1964 ), since 2012
  • Music Director Michael Schønwandt (* 1953) to 2011; From 2013 Michael Boder (* 1958)

The theater is under the Danish Ministry of Culture.

Trivia

The Royal Theatre is one of the scenes in the 1976 comedy film The resulting Danish Olsen Gang Sees Red by director Erik Balling.
