Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor de Kunsten Wetenschappen ( KVAB ) (English Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts ) (Eng. Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts) is the name of the Academy of Sciences in Flanders. The association has the purpose to promote science and art in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. It is thus the counterpart to the French-language L' Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux- Arts de Belgique ( ARB). The KVAB has, just like the ARB and the RASAB its seat in Brussels Palace of the Academies far from Warandepark. KVAB and ARB emerged together from the 1971 abolished national academy. The two follow-up academies operate since 2001, however, in the Hertogsstraat 1 Rue Ducale B- 1000 Brussels a common English-language cooperation department, which bears the name RASAB ( The Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium ) and for the international coordination of Belgian interests is responsible.

History

The beginnings of the Academy go back to the year 1769, when Empress Maria Theresa of establishing a " Literary Society " in Brussels gave their consent. However, the actual academy (as Keizerlijke en Koninklijke Academie voor Wetenschappen en Letteren van Brussel, the present-day Dutch-language name of the former institution ) was only created in 1772. There then followed a checkered history, the details of the history section of RASAB can be found.

Due to the Belgian state reform of 1970 finally the hitherto officially bilingual national organization "Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium " was abolished and replaced by two successor organizations in 1971. On the one hand by the Dutch-speaking Koninklijke Academie voor Wetenschappen, Letteren en Schone Kunsten ( KAWLSK ) and the other by the French-language L' Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux- Arts de Belgique ( ARB). Both organizations were allowed to consider as equal successor to the original, founded by Maria Theresa in 1772 " Imperial and Royal Academy ", the so-called Theresianische Academy ( Academia Theresiana ). In 1999, the Dutch-speaking organization changed its name to the now common form Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor de Kunsten van België Wetenschappen ( KVAB ). In 2009, finally, the fourth division of Technical Sciences was founded.
