Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Royal Lochnagar is a whiskey distillery in Ballater, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. It lies close to the River Dee about two kilometers downriver from privately owned by the British Royal Family at Balmoral Castle located. The distillery is named after the nearby mountain Lochnagar. It belongs to the spirits group Diageo (formerly United Distillers ). The whiskey is marketed today as part of the Classic Malts series of operations. The distillery buildings are sorted in the Scottish lists of monuments in the B category.

History

Lochnagar Distillery was founded in 1845 by John Begg. Queen Victoria bought Balmoral Castle in 1848 and paid in the same year, the distillery next door a visit. Begg was appointed purveyor to the court and the distillery could lead marked " Royal" in the name. In 1916 the distillery was owned by the Distillers Company Ltd.. and thus belongs today to Diageo.

The whiskey

There is a very widespread 12 -year-old filling, which can also be found in supermarkets. Furthermore, there is a so-called "Selected Reserve" no age given. Until about 2007, there was the Royal Lochnagar in different bottlings at the Rare Malts Selection. Since 2008 there is also a Distillers Edition, as it is usual for the Classic Malts. For the malt for some time was downstream in Moscatelfässern. Also from independent bottlers, there are always individual bottlings in the trade, including by Signatory and Douglas Laing. Royal Lochnagar is part of various blends, such as in Johnnie Walker (Gold and Blue Label ) and Dimple.
