Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute

The Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorological Institute (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, KNMI short ) is a Dutch institution which provides, among others, the daily weather forecast. The Institute is under the Ministerie van Traffic and Public Works ( Ministry of Transport and Waterways ).

The KNMI was founded on 31 January 1854 on a Royal Decree of King Willem III. the Netherlands. Professor CHD Buys Ballot, first executive director, chose as the location the observatory Sonnenborgh in Utrecht. In 1897, the institute relocated to after De Bilt.

The Institute employs approximately 500 employees in 2007.
