Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron ( RNZYS ) ( in German about: Royal New Zealand Yacht Group) is a leading and very old New Zealand Yacht Club in Auckland.

Internationally known RNZYS was called by their success in the America's Cup with Team New Zealand, or after the current main sponsor since 2006, Emirates Team New Zealand. In 1987 the club with the first 12 -meter fiberglass yacht at the Cup races in Fremantle, Australia, part ( KZ7, New Zealand under Chris Dickson ). He won this year for the Admiral's Cup with propaganda under Billy Butterworth. In 1995, the team then brought the pot without soil ( AC) on the home island and could in 2000 as the first non- American team to defend once. Participations in the AC: 1987, 1988, 1992, 1995, 2000, 2003, 2007 ( second place). After a sporting and technical break-up of the boat in the campaign 2002/2003 managed a rebuilding of the team. History

The club was founded in 1859 under the name of Auckland Yacht Club. In 1887 he joins the Hauraki club. In 1901 he changed his name to New Zealand Yacht Squadron. In 1902 he received from the British monarch the power to call themselves "Royal Club". Its honorary president is Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh. Since 1987, the offshore racing team ( as a kind of business Department), which organizes the participation in the America's Cup and other long distance races.
