Royal Ontario Museum

The Royal Ontario Museum ( ROM) is a museum in Toronto, (Ontario), Canada. It has a significant ethnological collection to cultures from all continents.

The museum was founded on April 16, 1912 by the Canadian province of Ontario and opened on March 19, 1914. It is next to Queen's Park and the University of Toronto and has notable collections of dinosaurs, about the history and culture of Egypt, South America, the Middle East, Africa and East Asia and Europe; Also find collections on the history, culture and diversity of Canada and five million other exhibits on art, archeology and science. Overall, the museum has more than six million individual exhibits, making it one of the largest museums in North America.

The building is located at the corner of Bloor Street and Avenue Road in close proximity to the Station Museum of the Toronto Subway. Although this place was at that time outside the urban area, it was the time chosen for its proximity to the university. The university and the ROM entertain a traditionally close relationships and use many scientific institutions and resources. In 1914 started the construction of the museum. First, the west wing was completed, which is now used for storage and as an office space. The museum was generously extended in the 1930s as a work creation scheme of the government during the Great Depression. In 1964, came on the south side of the Planetarium and 1975, the multi-story atrium, which doubled the floor space, added. The planetarium was closed in 1995, but opened in 1998 as a temporary children's museum again. There, after several traveling exhibitions were held.

As part of the project " The Crystal " ( the crystal), the museum was rebuilt in 2006/2007 according to the design of the famous architect Daniel Libeskind and expanded. As part of this restructuring, the Planetarium and the 1975 finished parts of the building were demolished and replaced by a huge crystal form that emerges laterally from the building. The building was officially opened on 3 June 2007.
