Royal Tropical Institute

The Royal Tropical Institute, Dutch Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropics (KIT ), short Tropeninstituut, is an independent Institute in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Until the independence of the colony of the Dutch East Indies in 1950 it was Koloniaal Instituut te Amsterdam.

The Institute operates internationally through development projects, scientific research and education.

The system operated by the Tropical Institute Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam is one of the most important museums of ethnology. In addition, the Institute operates a library and a publisher. The date also to the Institute belonging tropics theater was forced to close because of funding cuts on January 1, 2013.

Closing of the library

After reduction of subsidies, the library will be closed and their more than 900,000 books, maps and documents comprehensive collection probably discarded after 1 January 2014 into waste paper.
