RS Ophiuchi

RS Ophiuchi ( RS Oph short ) is a recurrent (recurrent ) nova in the constellation Ophiuchus. In the normal phase, it has an apparent magnitude of 12.5 mag. In the years 1898, 1933, 1958, 1967, 1985 and 2006 were made outbursts like to 4.5V.

RS Ophiuchi is one of the symbiotic stars, that is, it is a binary star system consisting of a white dwarf and a red giant. The dwarf star draws in matter from the red giant. After about 20 years, enough gas has accumulated to ignite a thermonuclear explosion under the strong gravity of the white dwarf.

The part of the name "RS" follows the rules for naming variable stars and states that RS Ophiuchi is the eleventh variable star, in the constellation Ophiuchus ( Ophiuchus Latin ) was discovered.
