The Rtanj ( Serbian Cyrillic Ртањ ) is a seven- kilometer-long mountain range in eastern Serbia. It is counted among the Carpathians. The mountain range is part of an approximately 125 -acre nature reserve, which border on the east by the Crni Timok and the line Boljevac - Rujište is formed. The mountain consists of limestone, Paleozoic shale and sandstone. In the altitude range 700-950 meters there is a little thick layer of dolomite. This area has a continental mountain climate, it is determined by a mixed forest of conifers and beeches, also some meadows.

The highest mountain is 1,565 m of Šiljak, on whose summit are the ruins of a chapel are located. Some believed the pyramid shape could save the mountain before the supposedly predicted by the Mayan calendar doomsday on December 21, 2012.

Flora and Fauna

The predominant habitat types are old mixed forest and wild or hardly cultivated, plant-rich meadows on limestone soils. In this area, 26 different plant communities and 644 plant species were recorded, 25 of which are endemic.

The knowledge of the fauna is considered to be satisfactory, the presence of 102 different species of animals has been demonstrated.
