Ruadrí, Earl of Mar

Ruadrí, also Ruadri or Rotheri (* / † unknown), 1st Earl of Mar, was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

About his life few details are known: He is regarded as one of the first Scottish nobles, in which the transition between the old Celtic tribal system and the new idea of a feudal territorial sovereignty is understandable: In the founding document of the Abbey of Scone from the year 1114 is to be find name Rotheri called Mormaor; on a document of the Abbey of Dunfermline in the year 1128 he appears as a witness to the signature of King David I. on already under the title earllis. In 1130 he performed in the Gaelic Notes of the Book of Deer as Ruadrí Mormar Marr, 1132 he was again witness to a deed, this time for Gartnait, Mormaor of Buchan.
