Ruapehu District

Ruapehu is a district in the center of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located entirely in the Manawatu-Wanganui Region.

Geography

In the Ruapehu District is one of the most beautiful areas of the North Island. Here are the Tongariro National Park, one of the oldest national parks in the world and much of the Whanganui National Park, extensive recreational areas for humans and nature. Preeminent have here the three volcanoes Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, after the district was named. The district belongs to the ecoregion Volcanic Plateau.

The district has no limit to the open sea. In the north it is bordered by the Waitomo District and on the east by the Taupo District. The next district in the southeast of the Rangitikei district, the next in the southwest is the Wanganui district. The western boundary eventually form the Stratford District and the New Plymouth District.

Population

Administrative headquarters of the district is the place Taumarunui. He has 2001 5136 inhabitants in the year. Other towns are Ohura, National Park and Ohakune.

Economy

The predominant industry of the district is the increasingly significant tourism. Already exists at Mount Ruapehu, the largest ski area in New Zealand with a total of 30 lifts.
