Rubidium oxide is an oxide of rubidium, which reacts violently with water. It does not happen in nature.

Properties

Rubidium is a yellow, crystalline solid. The salt crystallizes in an anti - calcium fluoride structure. The crystals are cubic with the space group, the lattice parameters a = 674 pm, and four formula units per unit cell. Rubidium reacts violently with water:

The standard enthalpy of rubidium is ΔHf0 = -331 kJ / mol.

Production and representation

Rubidium oxide may be prepared by reaction of rubidium and rubidium hydroxide:

Further synthesis options are:

And

Due to the direct reaction of rubidium and oxygen, however, arise Rubidiumhyperoxid RbO2 (mainly) or Rubidiumperoxid Rb2O2.

Safety

Since rubidium reacts violently with water, it acts on the skin as a base. When dealing with rubidium the contact thus should be avoided with skin.
