Ruby Hunter

Ruby Hunter ( born 1955 in Murray Bridge, † February 17, 2010 in Victoria) was an Australian singer.

Life

Hunter was a member of the Ngarrindjeri, a tribe of Aborigines. At the age of 16, she met her future spouse, the songwriter Archie Roach. Both worked well together musically from then on.

Hunter in 1994 was the first Aboriginal musician who got a record contract with a major label. Two of their albums, Thoughts Within and Feeling Good were nominated for the ARIA Award. In 2000 she was awarded the The Deadlys Award as best female artist of the year.

Hunter died of a heart attack.
