Rudi Fuchs

Rudolf Hermann ( Rudi ) Fuchs ( born April 28, 1942 in Eindhoven ) is a Dutch art historian, director of art museums, curator and artistic director of numerous international art exhibitions.

Life and work

Fuchs graduated in 1967 in History of Art at the University of Leiden. From 1962 to 1975 he was working as a journalist, first as an art critic for the Eindhoven Dagblad, later in 1967. Than art critic for De Gids and the NRC Handelsblad In 1975 he became director of the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. This place had Rudi Fuchs held until 1987. 1982 he was appointed Artistic Director of the World exhibition of art, Documenta 7 in Kassel. From 1984 to 1990, Fuchs Artistic Director of the Castello de Rivoli - Museo d' Arte Contemporeana Museum, Turin.

In the years 1987 to 1989 he worked as a curator major exhibitions in the United States: Among other things, in Minneapolis and Detroit; for the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art ( MCA) in Chicago. Since 1987 Fuchs was director of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in The Hague. He held until 1993 this position.

In 1992 he joined on as an organizer of the International Sculpture Exhibition " Place seduction " in Stuttgart. 1993 to 2003 he served as director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. During this time he met several times on as an organizer of international exhibitions. In 1995 he was curator of the exhibition " Views from abroad" for the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. In 1997 he was, together with Jan Hoet, curator of an exhibition of modern Dutch and Flemish art at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice. On 1 January 2005 he was appointed as a professor at the newly created Department of Arts Presentation at the University of Amsterdam ( UvA ).
