Rudolf Callmann

Rudolf Call Mann ( born September 29, 1892 in Cologne, died on March 12, 1976 in Queens, New York ) was a German -American jurist and expert on competition and trademark law.

Life and work

Callmann studied after he was wounded as a volunteer in the First World War, at the Universities of Berlin and Bonn law. In 1919 he was at the Albert- Ludwigs- University of Freiburg Dr. jur. doctorate. In 1923, he joined the law firm of his father, who was also the Cologne City Council and board member of the synagogue of Cologne. Rudolf Callmann led the firm with his brother. In 1929 he published a paper on unfair competition. 1934 was followed by a study of the German antitrust law. Due to the " front-line fighters privilege " call man could still practice to 1936 in Nazi Germany, despite his Jewish origins.

Call husband emigrated in 1936 in the United States. There he received a three-year research fellowship at Harvard University. In 1939 he was the American bar exam. Following the adoption of American citizenship Callmann received permission in 1943 to act as a lawyer. From 1939 to 1945 he worked at the American edition of his work. She appeared in 1945 dreibändig entitled "The Law of Unfair Competition and Trade Marks ". 1950 this publication was published back in its second, enlarged edition and soon became the standard work. In 1967, a five -volume edition came out, the last part of volume appeared posthumously. Call man came because of his expertise on several occasions as a witness before congressional committees.

1949 belonged Callmann the founders of the New York law firm "Green, Callmann & Durr ", which specialized in questions of competition and trademark. In addition, he was until 1971 Counsel of the law firm " Golenbock and Barell " (New York City).

1929 Call man entered the Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith a (CV) and served since 1930 as Deputy Chairman of the left-bank national association of CV. After 1933, he joined the General Committee of the Reich Association of German Jews.

1938/39, he became involved in the refugee organization " American Federation of Jews from Central Europe ", whose president or chairman he was. From 1955 on, Callmann also operated as a Vice President in the main board of the Jewish Claims Conference and as a member of the Presidium of the Council of Jews from Germany. Call husband was one of the initiators of the German - Jewish reparation talks with Theodor Heuss and Adenauer. To the Board of the Leo Baeck Institute, he also belonged. In 1971, Callmann with other persons, a New York nursing home ( Kew Gardens Nursing Home, later renamed the Margaret Tietz Center for Nursing Care).

Honors

Since 1959 Callmann worked as Honorary Professor at the University of Cologne. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. The German Association for Intellectual Property and Copyright Law gives since 1981, the Rudolf- Callmann Medal.
