Rudolf Eitelberger

Rudolf Eitelberger, Knights of Edelberg ( born April 17, 1817 in Olomouc / Olomouc, † April 18, 1885 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian and the first professor of art history at the University of Vienna ( 1853).

In addition, he was the initiator and first director of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, founded in 1864, and the affiliated Arts and Crafts School, founded in 1868.

Eitelberger united in his person science, culture, politics and art criticism of historicism. As an art historian, he was the " source texts on art history " out and is regarded as the founder of the Vienna School of Art History. He founded Austrian Museum for Art and Industry was along the lines of London's South Kensington Museum, the first Museum of Decorative Arts on the European mainland and role model for many similar institutions throughout Central Europe. In addition Eitelberger took on issues of current, contemporary art over and over again from a historical perspective position.

He is buried in a grave of honor in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 14 A, number 31). 1894 Eitelbergergasse in Vienna Hietzing was named in his honor.
