Rudolf Karel

Rudolf Karel ( born November 9, 1880 in Pilsen, † March 6, 1945 in Theresienstadt) was a Czech composer.

Biography

The son of a railway employee from 1899 to 1904 studied composition with Antonín Dvořák and organ with Klicka in Prague. In 1914 he traveled to Russia, where he was suspected after the outbreak of the war of espionage and subsequently arrested. He broke out of his Irkutsk captivity. After his return he became a teacher at the Prague Conservatory.

In Prague, he participated in the resistance against the Nazis and was arrested on 19 March 1943. In February 1945, he was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp.
