Rudolf Lehmann (artist)

Wilhelm August Rudolf Lehmann ( born August 19, 1819 in Ottensen in Hamburg, † 27 October 1905 Bournemede ( Bushey, England ) was a German - English painter.

Lehmann was the son of Leo Lehmann; the painter Henri Lehmann was his older brother. With 16 years Lehmann went in 1835 to Paris, where he was for two years the students at the École des Beaux -Arts; u.a of his brother Henry ( Henri ). End of 1837 Lehmann returned to Germany and settled in Munich.

There he was between the spring of 1838 and autumn of 1839 students in the studios of Peter von Cornelius and Wilhelm von Kaulbach. Supported by his teachers undertook Lehmann in November 1839 a study trip to Rome, from which he returned again in November 1846.

1850 Lehmann went to London and settled there as a freelance painter. 1851 he was invited to participate in the major annual exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1855 and 1859 Lehmann stayed back to study the ancient times in Rome.

Lehmann's third journey to Rome took place 1863-1864. A major focus in artistic creation Lehmann were his descriptions of daily life in Rome and the surrounding area. In addition, Lehmann was as a portrait painter in demand as an artist; writers Robert Browning, Ferdinand Gregorovius and Alphonse de Lamartine, the painter Peter von Cornelius and Adolph Menzel, the politician William Ewart Gladstone and Frederick Lygon 6th Earl Beauchamp, the scientist Alexander von Humboldt and Leopold von Ranke, the musician Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt Giacomo Meyerbeer uva sat him model.

1895 Lehmann published his memoirs in London An artist's reminiscences. In 1904, Lehmann participated for the last time in an exhibition at the Royal Academy. The following year, he died at the age of 86 years on 27 October in Bournemede at Bushey.
