Rudolf Löwenstein

Rudolph Loewenstein ( born February 20, 1819 in Breslau, † 5 January 1891 in Berlin) was a German humorous and political writer of Jewish origin.

Life

At age nine, he was baptized. He attended high school in Glogau and studied at the universities of Breslau and Berlin, where he also received his doctorate in 1843. During his studies, he became in 1840 a ​​member of the fraternity Raczeks Wroclaw. In Berlin, he became in 1860 an honorary member of the Berlin Arminia fraternity.

1836 published some of his poems in various Silesian newspapers. Increasing popularity he reached with his then published in 1846 poem cycle " The Kindergarten " (Children's poems).

Lowenstein was a member of numerous clubs. In particular, since 1842, he participated in the prestigious Berlin literary club tunnel across the Spree, where he met the famous Tunnelianer Theodor Fontane.

Just a few weeks after the founding of the famous satirical magazine " Kladderadatsch " in 1848, he was with David Kalisch and Ernst Dohm to the editorial board and the main authors of the magazine.

During the German Revolution of 1848/49 politically liberal -oriented, he was expelled in 1849 because of his activities from Prussia. Returned to Berlin in 1850, he continued his work in the original position for the Kladderadatsch yet another 37 years left. In 1863 he was still editor of the political part of the " court Zeitung". Literary activity

Lowenstein was literarily very productive and not only wrote the famous " Kindergarten " poems, but for example in 1874 " Honor the Women" and many lyrics, most of which were also set to music. This includes, inter alia, Song of the post. His political poetry, especially the 1860 and 1880, brought him great recognition and reputation.
