Rudolf of Fulda

Rudolf of Fulda ( * before 800; † March 8 865 in Fulda ) was a historian and theologian. He was active since 812 in the Registry of the monastery of Fulda, initially looked the records of the monastery. He verunechtete more of these documents, which should serve the long-term preservation of important site. To 822 he was appointed abbot Rabanus Maurus of sub-deacon and head of the monastery school and enjoyed high reputation in this feature of his students. In the year 827 he was ordained a priest. 847 he followed the Archbishop of Mainz appointed abbot at its new headquarters, but returned a short time later back to the monastery. He was apparently also active as a painter and poet.

Controversial is his share of the Annales Fuldenses antiquissimi, he probably but the section from 838-863 written or, at least, the Superintendence.

  • Ca.842 -847: Miracula sanctorum Ecclesia Fuldensium translatorum. Vita Hrabani: This work describes the acquisition of various relics of the monastery of Fulda by Rabanus Maurus and Rudolf itself
  • 863-865: Introduction of Translatio Sancti Alexandri: The written by the monk Meginhard main part describes the translation of the relics of Alexander Martyr of Rome to Wildeshausen by Waltbraht, a grandson of Duke Widukind. By Rudolf comes the introduction ( chapters 1-3), in which he makes detailed comments on the origin and the way of life of the pagan Saxons and the Saxon Wars. The representation of the Saxon way of life ( ch. 2-3), the corresponding statements in the Roman historian Tacitus' Germania based on the Rudolf has been literally a large scale. This is the only extensive use of the Germania of Tacitus in medieval literature. In addition, Rudolf has the report on the Saxon wars of Einhard " Vita Karoli Magni ," inserted (Section 3).
