Rudolf of Zähringen

Rudolf von Zahringen ( * ca 1135; † August 5, 1191 in Herder in Freiburg) was Archbishop of Mainz and Bishop of Liege.

His parents were Duke Konrad I of Zahringen and Clementia of Namur - Luxembourg. Rudolf was appointed in 1160 by the citizens of Mainz, succeeding Arnold of Selenhofen, by Emperor Frederick I not recognized. This was due to considerable tension between the Hohenstaufen and the Zähringers. After Rudolf was excommunicated at the Council of Lodi, joined Christian I of book succeeds in Mainz. 1167 Rudolf stood as Bishop of Liège and was assisted by his brother, Duke Berthold IV of Zahringen. During his tenure, a relic of the skull Lambert of Liege came to Freiburg, which is now part of Freiburg's Münster treasure.

On May 11, 1188 Rudolf broke with his army in Regensburg on the Third Crusade under Frederick Barbarossa. In October 1190 he reached the besieged city of Acre. 1191 He died on the way back to Herder and was buried in St. Peter's monastery.
