Rudolf Virchow lecture

With the Rudolf Virchow Lecture renowned annual Personalities of Old and Middle Stone Age archeology be honored since 1987. The award is named after Rudolf Virchow. The award is presented by the research area Paleolithic ( since 2012: Monrepos, Archaeological Research Center and Museum of human behavior evolution ) of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum and based on Monrepos ( Neuwied ), who feels particularly connected to Virchow's work.

The physician, archaeologist and politician Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902) founded the science embossed interdisciplinary archeology. Anthropology, zoology, botany, geology and chemistry were given by him a permanent place in archaeological research. At the same time, the liberal revolutionary March engaged in social policy, he opposed the colonial policy and anti-Semitic tendencies.

Rudolf Virchow sat down as a long -standing member of the full board of the Roman- Germanic Central Museum in Mainz successfully for their independence one. His scientific embossed, holistic, innovative research way, his social commitment and a liberal persuasion are a role model for modern archeology.

The public Rudolf Virchow lecture will be held in the Palace Theatre Neuwied. To make new research results to a wide audience and of course, it is always presented in German.

The Rudolf Virchow Lecture is one of the oldest public lecture series on the archeology of the Paleolithic in Germany. The lectures were published until 2002 as essays in the book of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum.
