Rudolf von Raumer

Rudolf ( Heinrich George) of Raumer ( born April 14, 1815 in Breslau, † August 30 1876 in Erlangen ) was a German linguist and German literature professor in Erlangen.

Life and work

The son of geologists, geographers and educators Karl Georg von Raumer (1783-1865) and Friederike Reichardt (1790-1869), daughter of the composer Johann Friedrich Reichardt, he studied from 1832 Classics and Oriental Studies at the University of Erlangen and Germanic languages ​​at Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann and the Brothers Grimm at the University of Göttingen. From the year 1834 he as four years later joined as well with his brother Hans Raumer of the fraternity of the boys Reuther. In 1839 he received his doctorate in Erlangen and habilitated here a year later. Subsequently, the University took him first as a lecturer, from 1846 as extraordinary and from 1852 as full professor of German language and literature at a specially set up for him place. In addition Raumer was in the years 1858/59 and 1866/67 Vice-Rector of the University.

In 1870 he wrote his main work, the band 9 of a series entitled The History of Science in Germany, which is preferably carried the title history of Germanic philology in Germany. He is called in Konrad Duden German spelling dictionary in the preface as a major influence for this font.

Raumer took part in the discussion orthography of the 19th century since 1855. In 1875 he received the commission of the Prussian Ministry of Culture for a spelling reform. On the Orthographic Conference 1876 in Berlin Raumer proposals have been introduced partly in Prussia and Bavaria. He was representative of the so-called moderate phonetic direction that tried to assert himself against the historical direction. In this context, was the most important treatise On German spelling, which is a part of the scientific dispute with Karl Weinhold.

Family

Rudolf von Raumer was married to Maria Schröder (1826-1893), daughter of the Fürth manufacturers Eduard Schröder. Together with her he had eight children, four of whom died young. One of his many grandchildren was the historian Kurt Raumer (1900-1982) and another lieutenant colonel of the Wehrmacht and the Messenger of Raumer Hermann (1893-1977), who was also the author of the family history.
