History

Due to its location at the city gate to Via Belgica Rudolf place had been before his creation of great importance for the traffic in and Cologne. Already in 1877 the first horse railway wrong here in Cologne. With the demolition of the city walls and the installation of the ring road from 1881 to the present square was formed. It is named after King Rudolf I Habsburg.

In the tram network of Rudolf place always had importance as a hub for linking the routes along the rings and the Aachener Straße.

In the 1980s, a tunnel along the rings was built to create additional space on the surface. The tunnel and with him the subway station Rudolf course was opened on 31 October 1987.

The above-ground station in the course of the Aachener Straße was rebuilt in 1995 to ensure barrier-free access to the new low-floor trams.

Shaping

The underground station includes a platform level with about situated at the distribution level. From the distributor level stairs lead to the stops of the overground trains running rail lines. The platforms are out of town on Hahnentor at the Aachener road into town. At the Richard Wagner-Straße At the same platforms also keep the buses of KVB. At the distribution level, there are public toilets, a kiosk and a street cafe.

The individual levels of the underground station are connected by escalators, fixed stairs and two elevators.

The entire station is tiled colored in accordance with the then Cologne standard, the design compared to the older buildings is already somewhat more complicated. On the platform towards the north there is a ceiling opening into the distribution level. In this area the wall is mirrored and provided with a stylized city gate.

Inputs

The platforms are located 35 inches above the top of rail, the station is, however, designed to operate with 90 centimeters high LRVs. Therefore, all escalators contained on this height, the actual station platform level is achieved by three more stages. With the permanent conversion of the Rings lines on low-floor operation, a platform raising is no longer planned.

The statics of the stops building is prepared for later undercrossing by an east -west rail, concrete constructional inputs do not exist. The project is conveniently politically controversial for decades and a reaction medium to be expected.

Metro Station Rudolf place was, as is the adjacent Metro Station Fries space, created in the wake of the Cold War as a nuclear bunker
