Rudolph, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst

Rudolf von Anhalt- Zerbst ( born October 28, 1576 Harzgerode; † August 20, 1621 in Zerbst ) from the family of Ascanians was a prince of Anhalt- Zerbst.

Life

Rudolf was the fifth son of Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt (1536-1586) from his second marriage with Eleanor (1552-1618), daughter of Duke Christoph of Württemberg.

Judging by witnesses, Rudolf was an avid student and student. In 1597 the twenty year old to marriage of the Danish King Christian IV was invited to Copenhagen. 1600 brought him his Grand Tour to Rome, where he met with Pope Clement VIII, on to Sicily. With his brother Prince Ludwig I, he spent a year in Florence. On November 21, 1601 Rudolf matriculated at the University of Siena. A year later, 1602, he returned via Switzerland to Dessau back. From 1603 he lives at the Zerbst court and support the local high school gesamtanhaltinische Francisceum, especially by the foundation of a library.

According to Community Government Rudolf and his brothers in 1606 divided the country Anhalt: Johann Georg was Prince of Anhalt -Dessau, Christian Prince of Anhalt -Bernburg, Ludwig Prince of Anhalt - Köthen and a few years later August Fürst von Anhalt- Plötzkau. Rudolf received the Principality of Zerbst the offices Kermen, Lindau, Roßlau and Coswig.

Rudolf then made a buildings in Zerbst, and repaired the residence castle. In 1618 Rudolf was taken by his brother Louis in the Fruitbearing society. At the age of 45 years Rudolf died in Zerbst and was buried in the local Bartholomew.

Marriages and descendants

Rudolf married in first marriage in Wolfenbüttel on December 29, 1605 Dorothea Hedwig ( 1587-1609 ), daughter of Duke Heinrich Julius of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel, with whom he had the following children:

On August 31, 1612 was Magdelene ( 1585-1657 ), daughter of Count Johann XVI. of Oldenburg, his second wife. Magdalene's brother bequeathed to 1667, the rule Jever to the House of Anhalt- Zerbst. From the marriage with Magdalene Rudolf had the following children:
