Rudolph Schadow

Zeno Karl Rudolf ( Ridolfo ) Schadow ( born July 9, 1786 in Rome, † January 31, 1822 ) was a German sculptor.

Life

Rudolf Schadow was the eldest son and pupil of Johann Gottfried Schadow. In 1810 he went with his brother Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow to study in Rome, where he took over the studio of Christian Daniel Rauch. Unlike his brothers Friedrich Wilhelm and Felix Schadow he decided not to painting but became a sculptor. His first independent work, a statue of Paris, in 1812 exhibited at the Berlin Academy. It clearly shows the influence of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.

Influenced by homesickness and low self-confidence, Schadow went back for a short time in Berlin, but left in January 1812, accompanied by Christian Daniel Rauch's return to Rome. He converted to Catholicism in 1814. A professor at the Düsseldorf Academy he declined in 1818 and remained in Rome. He died only 36 years old and was buried in Rome, Sant'Andrea delle Fratte.

Works

Schadow showed a rather romantic as the influence of classicism access to the sculpture with a sentimental tone.
