Ruelle-sur-Touvre

Ruelle -sur -Touvre is a municipality with 7391 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Charente region of France in the Poitou -Charentes.

Location

Ruelle -sur -Touvre located in the metropolitan area of Angoulême in the ancient cultural landscape of the Angoumois about seven kilometers ( route ) northeast of the city on the south bank of the Touvre at a height of about 45 meters above sea level. inst.

Demographics

In the 19th century, the population increased steadily from about 1,000 to over 4,000. Due to the proximity to the city Angoulême and comparatively cheaper property prices, the population of the community has since grown to over 7,000 residents.

Economy

The town and its surroundings were dominated for centuries for agriculture. In the early modern period occurred on the banks of the Touvre several paper mills. However, most important local employer is a foundry, founded by the Marquis Marc -René de Montalembert already in 1753 ( Fonderie ), which specialized in the production of naval guns.

History

In a document of the year 1080 were called the place and belonging to a Cluniac priory church of Saint- Médard de Rodella; in 1296 can be found Roella. The heyday of the site by the presence of several paper mills since the 17th century, some of which produced until the 20th century.

Attractions

  • The simple parish church ( Église Saint- Médard ) dates from the 13th century; they belonged to a priory of the abbey of Cluny, which was terminated, however, already in the late Middle Ages. During the nave still shows rubble masonry, is the renewed in the 16th century, built in the corners massively braced and fitted with a basket -arched portal facade exactly hewn limestone; the same applies to the slender bell tower on the south side.
  • The standing on a stepped base and provided with clear in dome cap Renaissance Fountain ( Fontaine Francois I ) is reminiscent of a visit to the king in the place. He has long been decommissioned, but was recognized in 1925 as a monument historique.
  • The Logis de Fissac from the 17th century is located about a kilometer west of the town in the same district. It is a two-story building with a provided with Lukarnenfenstern attic. Garden and courtyard are separated by a wall. The building was recognized in 1969 as a monument historique.
  • The Logis de Villement stands on the banks of the Touvre and is also worth seeing.
