Ruffieux

Ruffieux is a town in the French department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes. It is the capital of the canton in the Arrondissement Ruffieux Chambery.

Geography

Ruffieux is located on 296 m above sea level. M., near Culoz, about 31 kilometers north of the town of Chambery (air line). The village extends into the Chautagne, on the eastern edge of the broad Rhone Valley and on the edge of the Marais de Chautagne, at the western foot of Mont Clergeon.

The area of ​​13.21 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Rhone Valley. The western border is formed by the Rhône, which flows here parallel to the Jura chain from north to south in a wide valley. History

The territory of Ruffieux was settled very early. We have not found remains dating from the Neolithic and Roman inscriptions and coins. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Ruffius and means something like estate of Ruffius ( Ruffiacum ). In the Middle Ages Ruffieux was owned by the Montluel family that was at the castle of Châtillon ( Lac du Bourget ) resident. In the 15th century it belonged to the dominion of the Seyssel.
