Rufina and Secunda

Rufina and Secunda († 257 in Rome) was an early Christian Märtyrinnen who were martyred during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Valerian.

The Passio from the second half of the 5th century were, according to the own sisters Rufina and Secunda consecrated virgins, who were captured and tortured by the prefect Gaius Junius Donatus. He finally handed the Archesilaos, who had her beheaded on the Via Cornelia. There, at the ninth milestone came later, probably under Pope Julius I., a basilica, which no longer exists today. Pope Anastasius IV has can be transferred into the vestibule of the baptistery of the Lateran Basilica later the relics Secundas and Rufina. The Church Sante Rufina e Seconda in Rome is to rise above the former home of the saints.

Rufina and Secunda are revered as holy virgins; their Memorial Day in the liturgy is July 10.
